Located in the easternmost of Shandong Peninsular and surrounded by sea from three sides, Weihai covers an area of 5,800 square kilometers with a population of 2.83 million. Weihai has under its jurisdiction 2 districts and 2 county-level cities, 3 national-level development zones, a free trade zone and Nanhai New Area.
Weihai is an ecological city with pleasant living environment. As China's first National Sanitary City, it has won the UN Habitat Scroll of Honor, China Habitat Environment Prize, and China Environment Award, the highest social honor of environmental protection in China. Weihai has also held International Habitat Festival for 9 successive times. As a city of the first Outstanding Tourism Cities cluster in China, it has been selected as National Tourism Standardization Demonstration City.
Weihai has been designated as a pilot city for innovative development of trade in services and a national-level integrated pilot zone for cross-border e-commerce. Weihai and Incheon Free Economic Zone have been selected as the demonstration areas for local economic cooperation under China-ROK Free Trade Area. The city has established 31 sister-city relations or friendly cooperative relations at various levels.
Weihai is the largest fishery production base in China. Taking the lead in high sea fishing, aquaculture and aquatic product processing in the country, it has been designated as China Seafood Processing and Logistics Base and China Seafood City. Weihai has also been approved as National Pilot City for Maritime High-tech Industrial Base, National Demonstration City of Innovation and Development of Maritime Economy, and National Demonstration Zone of Maritime Economic Development.
