In 2018, fixed assets investment in transportation in Shandong exceeded 160 billion RMB yuan. The length of highways open to traffic was 275,600 kilometers with the density of 175.9 kilometers for every 1 million square kilometers. The length of expressways in service was 6,058 kilometers and 27 expressway projects are under construction with a length of 2,384 kilometers. The in-operation railways in Shandong reached 6,222 kilometers, including 1,747 kilometers of high-speed railway. Shandong, home to 7 coastal ports, including 3 ports in Qingdao, Rizhao and Yantai each with a cargo throughput of over 400 million tons, had a total cargo throughput of 1.61 billion tons. The length of inland waterways was 1,150 kilometers and that of level 3 waterways was 272 kilometers. There were 9 civil airports, including two hub airports, 1 trunk airport and 6 branch airports. Eleven comprehensive passenger transport hubs, 977 passenger stations and 345 freight transport stations at different levels have been built. Five subway lines of 195.1 kilometers have been in operation.
